Constitution Day of Ukraine is marked annually on 28 June. On this day in 1996, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Constitution of Ukraine, the Fundamental Law of the state, which enshrined Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, its democratic system, as well as human and citizens’ rights and freedoms.
The Constitution begins with the fundamental principles of Ukrainian statehood. Article 1 defines Ukraine as a sovereign, independent, democratic, social and law-based state. Article 2 states that Ukraine’s sovereignty extends throughout its entire territory, and that the territory of Ukraine within its existing border is integral and inviolable. Article 3 proclaims the human being, life and dignity as the highest social value. Article 5 establishes the people as the only source of power in Ukraine.
In the context of Russia’s aggression, these provisions have particular significance. Ukraine is defending not only its borders, but also the right of its people to determine their own future, as well as the principles of freedom, law, dignity and justice.
This day reminds the world of a simple and unchanging truth: Ukraine is and will remain a free, sovereign and independent state.
