Today, on the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in India visited Apeejay School International in New Delhi at the invitation of the school.

The space was thoughtfully decorated with Ukrainian embroidery, photographs, flags and national colours, along with visual materials reflecting Ukraine’s culture, identity and resilience.

Deputy Chief of Mission, Minister-Counsellor Artem Nosko addressed students and teachers, speaking about the meaning of this day and the importance of honouring those who defend Ukraine, its freedom and independence. Observed on the same date as the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, or Pokrova, the Day of Defenders has a special place in Ukrainian history and tradition.

The gathering began with the National Anthem of Ukraine. At 9:00 a.m. Kyiv time, the school joined the nationwide minute of silence observed across Ukraine. A candle was also lit in memory of the heroes who gave their lives defending the country.

Teacher Dana Philen presented “My Journey with Ukraine”, sharing her personal impressions and memories from her own visit to Ukraine.

Senior students led a discussion for younger pupils on international law, national defence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the UN Charter and the role of international organisations in maintaining peace and security.

The day also had a special connection with the Ukrainian community in India. One of the school’s pupils, whose mother is an active member of the community, created a painting dedicated to Ukrainian resilience and presented it to the Embassy.

We were also happy to share a little taste of Ukraine with the children through Ukrainian sweets.

We sincerely thank Apeejay School International, its teachers and students for the warm welcome, thoughtful programme and genuine attention to Ukraine. Our special thanks go to Principal Stephen Tumpane and Dana Philen for their personal involvement and for helping make this meaningful event possible.
