On 22 April 2026, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India hosted a special hybrid collaborative event as part of Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 in India — a Wikipedia workshop and edit-a-thon held in cooperation with Indian Wikimedia communities.
The event brought together Wikipedians and Wikimedia contributors both in person in New Delhi and online. It focused on improving content about Ukrainian culture in Indic languages, contributing to Wikipedia and Wikidata, and fostering cross-cultural collaboration and open knowledge between Ukraine and India.
Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of India Dr. Oleksandr Polishchuk addressed the participants and underlined the importance of developing Wikipedia articles about Ukraine in Indic languages. He emphasized that every contribution to truthful and accessible knowledge about Ukraine is highly appreciated, as it helps audiences around the world better understand Ukraine and becomes part of Ukraine’s cultural resilience.
During the meeting, Ms. Olesia Lukaniuk from Wikimedia Ukraine joined online to present the goals, format, and wider international context of Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026.
The event was made possible thanks to close cooperation with Indian Wikimedia communities. We are especially grateful to Mr. Jinoy Tom Jacob from the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group, who joined online and played an important coordinating role throughout the preparation process.
We also sincerely thank Mr. Aaqib Anjum Aafi from Deoband Community Wikimedia, who coordinated the participation of the community and joined the event at the Embassy together with its members. We highly appreciate the contributions of all participants — both those who joined us in person and those who took part online — to the workshop and edit-a-thon.
As a token of appreciation and to offer participants a closer experience of Ukrainian cultural heritage, Third Secretary of the Embassy Tetiana Sharma conducted a masterclass on the traditional Ukrainian motanka doll.
We are especially pleased that, for the first time, Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month included a dedicated event in India for Indian Wikimedia communities. We hope this first step will lead to broader participation of Indian Wikimedia communities and more Indic languages in the years ahead.
Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month is an international campaign organised by Wikimedia Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Institute, with the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies as a strategic partner. The initiative continues until 30 April 2026 and aims to expand reliable and accessible knowledge about Ukraine, its culture, history, people, and contemporary identity on Wikipedia in different languages around the world.
We look forward to seeing the results of the campaign and to celebrating the contributions of all participants.
