On March 12, 2025, Moving Through Music concert presented an array of Austrian and Ukrainian music - from classical and romantic to contemporary styles at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi.
This concert is a collaboration between the Embassy of Ukraine in India, the Austrian Embassy New Delhi, and the Austrian Cultural Forum in New Delhi.
At the heart of the evening was Dr. Taras Filenko, Ukrainian distinguished pianist and ethnomusicologist, whose mastery of Ukrainian music set the tone for an unforgettable performance.
The programme included music by classical composers Joseph Haydn and Dmytro Bortnyansky, romantic composers Gustav Mahler and Mykola Lysenko, and contemporary composers George Gershwin and Myroslav Skoryk and others.
A special highlight of the evening was the fusion of Ukrainian folk traditions with improvisational elements.
Soprano Silvja Radjen Kumar introduced a selection of Ukrainian folk songs, bringing their lyrical beauty to life with her expressive voice.
Meanwhile, the French-German saxophonist Rainer Pusch and tabla player Arvind Pandey joined Dr. Taras Filenko in improvising on Ukrainian themes. This unique collaboration - blending jazz-like freedom with classical and folk influences—created a dynamic, first-of-its-kind jam session that captivated the audience and showcased the fluidity of musical traditions across cultures.
For an hour and a half, the audience experienced a seamless blend of cultures, instruments, and musical styles—highlighting both the depth of tradition and the beauty of innovation.
Beyond the melodies, Dr. Taras Filenko also conducted a presentation of Ukrainian art and photographs of destroyed cultural and educational institutions.
Following the concert, guests had the opportunity to explore a photo exhibition, featuring a rare collection of photographs from Austrian archives, offering a unique glimpse into Ukraine at the beginning of the 20th century.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable evening!
