Punjab — New Delhi — West Bengal: a Chain of Unity in India on Ukraine’s Day of Unity
22 January 2026 16:07

On 22 January 2026, to mark Ukraine’s Day of Unity, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India held a symbolic “Chain of Unity” action, linking several cities across different Indian states through a shared gesture of support and togetherness.

In Ludhiana (Punjab), a 30-metre Ukrainian national flag was unfurled.

In New Delhi, the Embassy team also joined the initiative, underscoring the enduring unity of Ukrainians — despite distance.

The action gained special significance in Kolkata (West Bengal), where the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair opened on the same day. Symbolically, the opening of the fair coincided with Ukraine’s Day of Unity. This year, Ukraine was officially represented at the fair for the first time, with its own national stand. To mark this historic milestone, a banner bearing the State Emblem of Ukraine was solemnly displayed at the Ukrainian stand.

Ukraine’s Day of Unity commemorates the Act of Unification — the historic union of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR), proclaimed on 22 January 1919 in Kyiv. The idea of national unity also resonated powerfully in modern history: on 21 January 1990, before Ukraine regained its independence, hundreds of thousands of people formed a “living chain” stretching for hundreds of kilometres, becoming a lasting symbol of unity across the country.

Today, as Ukraine once again defends its freedom and territorial integrity against Russia’s aggression, the “Chain of Unity” carries an even deeper meaning. It is a reminder that our strength lies in unity, mutual support, and faith in a shared victory. From Punjab through New Delhi to West Bengal, this initiative became another gesture of solidarity — bringing together Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine in India around what matters most: one, united Ukraine.

GLORY TO UKRAINE! GLORY TO THE HEROES!
