The Embassy of Ukraine in India warmly congratulates Dr. Mridula Ghosh — Associate Professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Chair of the East European Development Institute, distinguished academic, columnist, and long-time friend of Ukraine — on being awarded the Order of Merit, 3rd class by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day. The ceremony took place at St. Sophia Square — the historic heart of Ukrainian statehood. 

By Presidential Decree of Ukraine No. 617/2025, Dr. Ghosh was awarded for her significant contribution to strengthening interstate cooperation, supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, charitable activities, and promoting our country internationally.

This high state honour also recognizes her tireless efforts to strengthen Ukraine–India relations, with particular devotion to building people-to-people connections, fostering mutual understanding, and creating lasting bridges of friendship between our nations. It also reflects her steadfast commitment to Ukraine — remaining in Kyiv during these challenging years of war and continuing her invaluable work.

Dr. Ghosh’s contribution is truly comprehensive: from academia and cultural dialogue to history and politics. Through this broad perspective, she has amplified Ukraine’s international voice and ensured it is heard in all its dimensions. 

At the ceremony, President Zelenskyy warmly praised Dr. Ghosh for her beautiful command of the Ukrainian language — a touching recognition of her deep connection to Ukraine.

Coincidentally, President Zelenskyy and Dr. Ghosh both wore black-and-white embroidered shirts — Ukrainian #vyshyvanka and Bengali #Alpona respectively — an unplanned harmony that beautifully reflected the cultural closeness of Ukraine and India.

The Order of Merit carries profound symbolism: its deep red ribbon with asymmetric blue and yellow stripes represents Ukraine’s national colours, while its silvery medal bears a dark cross with the Ukrainian trident (tryzub) at the centre, encircled by a golden wreath.

The Embassy of Ukraine expresses sincere gratitude to Dr. Ghosh for her dedication, solidarity, and remarkable work.
